Many new pharmaceutical products are injectible medications that are very specific to a disease or condition. These products can also have more severe side effect profiles and may need more intense patient monitoring. Most importantly, these products are very expensive and are not typically dispensed from retail pharmacy locations.
The industry that has evolved to service patients that need these therapies is called "Specialty Pharmacy". Originally many companies that were developed to service this industry were standalone, but most have now been purchased by the Big PBMs. The Specialty Pharmacy product pipeline is quite extensive and many products costing thousands of dollars to administer will soon be entering the marketplace.
